Chapter Eleven

“Ma’am it isn’t no trouble at all,” a familiar tone buzzed from the other side of the tent. My cheeks were sticky again, and my lashes were really starting to piss me off with this matted business. They didn’t burn like pink eye had, but it sure was annoying.

Daylight warmed my cheeks, and Momma’s dignified tone assaulted my ears. “We don’t need any charity. Flossie May is just fine!”

“No, Ma’am, it’s no charity. I’m her friend.”

I shifted to my elbow and cried out. I knew that voice, it was Rachel, the nurse!

“Avery sent me; you’ll just have to excuse me, Ma’am... I can hear my patient from out here.”

Without waiting for any objections, Rachel’s shadow passed Momma’s, and she flew inside the tent.

“Skies!” she exclaimed. I could feel her assessing me from across the room. She went back outside and returned a few moments later with a warm wet rag. “Why did they let you cry so? How come no one came for help, Flossie May?”

“I didn’t cry.”

She ducked back like I’d swatted at her, and her eyes swam over my face.

“If you say so, sweetie.” She smiled and finished cleaning me up. “I wish I had some ice to put on that... gosh it’s a sight.”

“She’s beautiful, always has been, always will be,” Kels called from the doorway.

“No,” I whispered. I tried to open my eyes and quietly convince her to send him away, but the effort gave me an instant headache. My swollen eye started to water, and I collapsed back onto the pillow.

“I want ya to come to breakfast with me,” Kels said after dramatically clearing his throat.

“Tell him I ain’t goin’ nowhere,” I whispered with a wince.

“She ain’t fit to be out of bed yet, General Duvaul.” Rachel was gentle, but firm. Maintaining her position as the medical authority and my friend. “She’s been worn out somethin’ fierce.”

Well, hell, there she went tellin’ everything she knew.

“I see. Please give her my regards and tell her I shall check on her at dawn.”

“It’s dawn now,” I grumbled.

“It’s damn near noon,” he retorted in a voice that spoke of his retreat.

“I reckon that means he intends on visitin’ every mornin’ until ya agree to see him.” Rachel giggled.

She brought cold compresses from the creek and swapped them out every few hours until the swelling finally started to go down.

I learned that she’d joined a few weeks before us. She spoke of her family and her mother’s devotion to midwifery. I was thankful for her talking, even if I couldn’t bring myself to trade stories with her.

Just as she’d predicted, Kels was back and in rare form the next morning.

“Flossie May, come on out here. Don’t make me come in and carry you out.”

“Why... ?” I groaned, burying my face in the pillow. I was just starting to feel human again and didn’t want to risk ruining it by moving about.

“Because I asked you to.” He laughed.

I hesitantly shifted and sat up without too much difficulty. It seemed despite my memory of dragging my ass across the floor, my legs worked just fine.
